How to Research Memecoins: On-Chain Data, Tools, and Risk Checks

To research memecoins, verify each token with on-chain data, use real-time trend tools, and treat social media hype with skepticism. On-chain metrics carry more weight than tickers trending on X, since hype is easy to fake. Tools like Dexscreener, Birdeye, and Solscan show liquidity, holder distribution, and whether mint authority has been revoked.

The biggest red flags are a fresh deployer wallet, a liquidity pool that is not locked, or the top 10 wallets holding 70% or more of the supply, so users advise skipping those tokens no matter who promotes them. Safer tokens have burnt liquidity, revoked minting rights, and revoked freezing rights. To find new coins, watch the 5-minute trending list on Dexscreener filtered to memecoins between 40k and 800k market cap on networks like Solana, and use apps like Memescreener, GMGN, Trojan Trade, and Axiom for snipe alerts, faster execution, and better charting.

Users stress that memecoins are highly speculative and most will likely go to zero, so treat them as gambling and never trade rent money. Influencers often promote coins they are paid for, and many big plays involve insider groups, which makes followers the exit liquidity. A genuinely active community is one of the strongest signals of a memecoin's success, and it is something tools alone will not show you.

Research tools

  1. Dexscreener 5-minute trending list with filters for network, market cap, and memecoin activity
  2. Birdeye on-chain metrics for verifying a token's legitimacy
  3. Solscan check liquidity, holder distribution, and mint authority status
  4. Memescreener snipe alerts with push notifications when a memecoin starts trending
  5. GMGN trading terminal with fast execution for the memecoin market
  6. Trojan Trade trading app built for speed and faster entries
  7. Axiom better charting and execution features

Prioritize On-Chain Data Over Social Hype

Verify legitimacy with on-chain data. Social media hype can be misleading, and tools like Dexscreener, Birdeye, and Solscan can provide crucial metrics such as liquidity, holder distribution, and whether mint authority has been revoked to prevent "rug pulls." "On chain metrics have more weightage than just the tickers on X imo."
Beware of tokens with concentrated ownership. If the top 10 wallets hold a significant percentage (e.g., 70%+) of the supply, or if the liquidity pool (LP) is unlocked, it's a major red flag for potential manipulation. "if a token has fresh deployer wallet + unlocked LP + top 10 wallets holding 70%+ supply, skip it no matter who's shilling it on twitter."
Check for burnt liquidity and revoked minting rights. These actions by developers indicate a reduced risk of them draining funds or creating unlimited new tokens, which are common scam tactics. "Always make sure tokens have burnt LP, revoked minting rights, and revoked freezing rights, as these are important to avoid rugs."

Leverage Real-Time Trend Analysis and Tools

Monitor trending tokens on DEX screeners. Tools like Dexscreener allow you to filter for memecoins with recent activity or trending status, often within specific blockchains like Solana. "Check dexscreener and click on 5-minute trending. Add filter of memecoins within Solana network and add between 40k and 800k marketcap."
Utilize specialized apps and trading terminals. Apps like Memescreener, GMGN, Trojan Trade, and Axiom offer features like snipe alerts, faster execution, and better charting, which are crucial for the fast-paced memecoin market. "Check out our snipe alerts feature on the Memescreener app, you can turn on push notifications to be alerted every time a memecoin starts trending"
Follow social media sentiment and news. While risky, Twitter (X) and Telegram can indicate early trends, especially if high-profile figures like Elon Musk are involved, but cross-reference with on-chain data. "Most important is to check Elon Musk's activity though as anything even remotely memeable will turn into a memecoin and rise alot in marketcap."

Understand the Risks and Community Dynamics

Recognize the high risk involved. Memecoins are highly speculative and volatile; most will likely go to zero, and they should be treated as gambling, not investing. "Expect extreme volatility, assume most tokens go to zero, never trade rent money."
Be wary of "insider trading" and paid promoters. Many successful memecoin plays involve early investors or "cabal" groups, and influencers often promote coins they are paid to, making others "exit liquidity." "It’s all insider trading tbh on meme coins. 99% folks lose money. Please don’t follow no influencers as you are the exit liquidity for them."
Evaluate the community's genuine engagement. A strong, active community is often cited as a key factor for a memecoin's success, beyond just trading volume or social media mentions. "If you only rely on tools you will miss the most important step which makes memecoins succesful IT'S COMMUNITY"

Is it worth the risk to invest in memecoins given their high volatility?

Bottom line

To research memecoins, focus on real-time social media trends, on-chain data, and specialized tools to identify potential opportunities and avoid scams.

A token when preparing to lead a trend, often has a series of signals one of which is the buy volume signal, which we can easily recognize if we use the Snipgure tools

This tool listens to all on-chain transactions and will send you a signal when a token reaches a certain trading volume, like 5 minutes with 5k volume, 5 minutes with 50k volume, or 1 hour with 100k/200k/500k volume.

So, if a token has signals ranging from 5 minutes with 5k volume to 500k volume in 1 - 2 hours, it may become a trending token soon. However, you need to check their community first, because some tokens create fake volume to rug.

Always make sure tokens have burnt LP, revoked minting rights, and revoked freezing rights, as these are important to avoid rugs.

Memecoin trading has become one of the fastest-moving segments in crypto. If you’re completely new and searching “how to start trading memecoins”, this guide will walk you through everything you actually need to know — from wallets and risk management to execution tools and common beginner mistakes.

This is written for absolute beginners and focuses on Solana memecoin trading, where most activity happens today.

What Are Memecoins?

Memecoins are cryptocurrencies driven primarily by:

  • Community hype
  • Social momentum
  • Viral narratives

Unlike traditional projects, memecoins usually:

  • Launch quickly
  • Move violently in price
  • Have very short trading windows

That’s why execution speed and tools matter far more than long-term fundamentals.

Step 1: Understand the Risks (Seriously)

Before trading:

  • Expect extreme volatility
  • Assume most tokens go to zero
  • Never trade rent money

Memecoin trading is speculation, not investing. Treat it like high-risk trading, not a guaranteed income stream.

Step 2: Set Up the Right Wallet

To trade memecoins, you need a non-custodial wallet.

Most traders use:

  • Phantom
  • Solflare
  • Backpack

Make sure:

  • You control your private keys
  • You keep extra SOL for fees
  • You never share your seed phrase
Step 3: Fund Your Wallet Correctly

You’ll usually need:

  • SOL (for gas + trading)
  • USDC (optional, lower volatility)

Tip: Always keep extra SOL available — failed transactions happen during launches.

Step 4: Where Memecoin Trading Actually Happens

Most memecoin trading does not happen on centralized exchanges.

It happens via:

  • Solana DEXs
  • Trading terminals
  • Telegram trading bots

This is where beginners usually get confused.

Step 5: Use a Trading Terminal (Not Basic DEX UI)

If you’re serious about memecoin trading, using a dedicated trading terminal is critical.

Why?

  • Faster fills
  • Less slippage
  • Automation
  • Better charts

Popular Solana traders often use platforms like:

  • Axiom
  • Trojan Trade

These tools connect directly to your wallet and execute trades on-chain with optimized routing.

You don’t need them to start — but once you miss a few entries due to slow execution, you’ll understand why people switch.

Step 6: Learn Core Memecoin Trading Features Market Buys & Sells

Instant execution at current price. Used for momentum trades.

Slippage Control

Higher slippage = higher chance of fill during launches, but worse price.

Priority Fees

Pays extra SOL to get your transaction processed faster.

DCA Orders

Automatically buy over time instead of all at once.

Copy Trading

Mirror trades from wallets you trust.

These features are commonly built into advanced Solana trading platforms.

Step 7: How to Find Memecoins Early

Most traders discover memecoins through:

  • Twitter/X
  • Telegram groups
  • Launch trackers
  • Wallet tracking

Never buy a token without:

  • Checking liquidity
  • Verifying the contract address
  • Watching early volume behavior
Step 8: Common Beginner Mistakes

Avoid these:

  • Ape buying green candles
  • Using too much slippage
  • Ignoring liquidity locks
  • Trading without a plan
  • Overtrading

Speed matters, but discipline matters more.

Step 9: Start Small and Scale Slowly

Your first goal isn’t to get rich.
Your goal is to:

  • Learn execution
  • Understand volatility
  • Avoid getting rugged

Once consistent, then scale size.

Tools That Help Beginners (Optional, Not Required)

Many traders eventually use:

  • Trading terminals for speed
  • Wallet trackers
  • Charting tools
  • Automation features

Platforms like Axiom or Trojan Trade are often mentioned because they combine most of these features in one place — especially for Solana memecoins.

Use what fits your experience level.

Final Thoughts

If you searched “how to start trading memecoins”, the most important takeaway is this:

Start slow, use the right tools when ready, and treat every trade as disposable capital.

This is not financial advice. Always do your own research.

I'm trying to get better at catching memecoins early, and Twitter is obviously where everything surfaces first. But I am finding it close to useless.

The problem is that everyone posting tickers is either paid to post them, or is just as late as I am. The accounts that call the loudest are often the same ones quietly deleting their posts after their bags tank. Also, following more people has actively made this worse for me, not better.

What I'm doing now is tracking a small private list of maybe 15 accounts. These are the people who highlight trends before they pick up. I’m still not sure whether this is the right approach. Either way, I still cross-check onchain data before I believe any calls.

What are some good tools to track this?

I want to start my own cryptocoin so I thought I'd start asking the question - what is it that people look for when investing there money into a new coin - I know its highly speculative and there are many stable established options out there so I was wondering what would catch your eye?

Would some kind of charitable outlook from the coin's makers help? (so many of the tech bros/manosphere thing is all about self promotion and showing off about their wealth and success but I find that icky

i believe that trading meme coins is fundamentally equivalent to betting on the attention that the meme coin will receive.

How do you check how much attention a specific meme coin is getting? or its on trending?

You can catch early meme coins like i used to do.
Use pump.fun and Dexscreener for that.
Look at the tokens only which are near to graduations, once they get graduated from pump.fun. They actually have good pump over Dexscreener.
Then for example in last 30 minutes 5 coins have graduated from pump.fun. Now check them on dexscreener that which one of them have bought “Boost” or Started “Ads”
So, if the fresh graduated token has started Ads or Boost right after graduation from Pump.fun. Its a big signal that, this coin will stay green for a while and founders are ready to invest some money over paid exposure.
See if they have active TG and X handle. That will again be a plus point.

Note: Memecoins are risky, stay vigilant

  1. Look for call groups on Telegram (you can find them by searching for ''lounge'' or ''calls''). The best ones you have to pay for. The ones that are free will usually use you as exit liquidity.

  2. Check dexscreener and click on 5-minute trending. Add filter of memecoins within Solana network and add between 40k and 800k marketcap.

  3. Follow KOL's on X. Most important is to check Elon Musk's activity though as anything even remotely memeable will turn into a memecoin and rise alot in marketcap.

  4. Search for google trends and see what is trending recently. Some trends will transfer to becoming memecoins. Then look at pump.fun with the featured filter and see if any are created that are gaining momentum. Google trends will usually create the more political memecoins though, based on news like Luigi Mangione for example.

  5. Look at tiktok and search for ''creator search insights''. Here you will see what is trending, alot of it will turn into a memecoin as tiktok is focused on fun, weird, quirky and hilarious stuff.

yeah, i’d do the same. twitter calls can be useful for spotting trends, but i’d trust on-chain volume and liquidity way more than someone shilling a ticker.

Nah crazy how no one comments seriously. Early is risk. The number of rug pulling bundlers early is insane. Oh it’s up to 25k about to graduate you’re $200 in? Not anymore fam instantly down to 2.3k. Stick w over 100k as beginner

Hey everyone I might sound dumb but I am new here. Been trying memecoins from couple Of weeks now. I got one big hit from Cheyene called by my homeboy. I wanna see the genuine social places, groups to find the coins which are legit and gonna take to moon. But whenever I open X all I see is self promoting dev which if I believe and invest will prolly get rugged. Was 800 up now I got only 200 left on my wallet. My main concern is where to find memecoins any group chats or any reliable sources or anything. I wanna invest till I get my tuition fee and I will quit. Tired of working part time in my university. I wanna do something big but I can’t. I don’t find some good place for insights and invest on it. Thank you And sorry for being dumb.

Best way is by following good people who tweet them early

Nice tut bro , i have using this for a while, get rug sometime, but with this we can find token with good volume and wait for it dump and buy the dip

How about stop being lazy and use dexscreener then check every shitcoins communities?l If you only rely on tools you will miss the most important step which makes memecoins succesful IT'S COMMUNITY

It’s a secret. If everyone was early, we’d all be late 👍

As soon as you find out, let the rest of the gang know 😉 If you have any doubts on a coin feel free to use a tool I built to verify if it's a good token, just paste the mint address into and you'll see the option to scan for free. Best of luck, hope you find some decent tokens 💪

Catapult Corgi Coin is a must look $CCC. It is about a 100k marketcap right now and will be growing quickly with all of the community involvement. We have a strong presence on telegram. The dev is transparent and has his whole roadmap for the coin on his linktree. We are very excited for the new year.

On chain metrics have more weightage than just the tickers on X imo.

Don’t listen to the shillers, the fastest and easiest way is to just use the onLogs method.

The only meme coin you need to find early is catapult corgi. 7u3aEdtAfjb33aN58A56RSCYfMxHHUuMkiLsey3Ypump

I dont understand how shilling like that will help your project, you should improve your selling skills because the way you write sounds scammy lol.

I was just wondering whether it's still worth trading, especially meme coins. Is there still any point in speculating on them, or has AI completely changed the game?

Not that I was ever anything amazing, but I used to trade altcoins and meme coins back in the day. I was just wondering if it's worth giving it another try, or if that ship has sailed.

if a token has fresh deployer wallet + unlocked LP + top 10 wallets holding 70%+ supply, skip it no matter who's shilling it on twitter.
Check out our snipe alerts feature on the Memescreener app, you can turn on push notifications to be alerted every time a memecoin starts trending
