I'm personally looking forward to The Blood of Dawnwalker a lot, but 2027 as a whole is looking incredible, really. If even just half the games on the schedule live up to their respective hype, we'll have one of the best years to date for RPGs. There's a great variety of settings and RPG types, too.
Divinity above all else, although it will be quite a wait.
Dark Heresy , Clockwork , Expanse , Exodus , Starfinder , Crimson Desert , TES 6(Its coming soon DAMMIT) , Fable
ENWorld is running its annual vote for the most anticipated TTRPG of the year. The list of nominees there is pretty extensive, but I'm curious which game—full game, not supplements or scenarios—people in this sub are looking forward to showing up in 2026.
My first thought was Apocalypse World: Burned Over, but with a Kickstarter delivery date of Dec. 2026 I think it's fair to say that's more likely be a 2027 game. So I think I'd go with Hot War, despite the fact that I'll probably never run it.
What about you, if you can only pick one?
I grew up on JRPGs during the golden PlayStation era. Xenogears, The Legend of Dragoon, Shadow Hearts, and Breath of Fire were just a few of my all-time favorites. Back then, the genre offered an incredible variety of experiences and was absolutely booming, a trend that would continue for many years.
Then came a noticeable decline in turn-based RPGs, but thankfully, the genre has made a strong comeback, which is exactly why I’m here: to recap some of the most exciting upcoming JRPGs currently in development that capture the spirit of the classics so many of us grew up loving.
This list focuses on upcoming JRPGs and RPGs inspired by them, and a few hybrids that sit close enough to the genre to deserve attention. Release information is current as of now, but as always with upcoming games, dates may shift.
Hey everyone!
I'm a long-time RPG veteran and I'm curious: what RPGs are you most excited to play over the next 5 years?
I'm especially looking forward to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3, Warhorse LOTR game and The Blood of Dawnwalker.
Some of my all-time favorites are Oblivion, Skyrim, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1 & 2, The Witcher 1–3, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Elden Ring.
I wasn't a fan of GreedFall. I generally prefer immersive worlds, strong stories, meaningful exploration, memorable characters, and a sense of progression over repetitive or overly "gamey" mechanics.
I play on PC.
Are there any upcoming RPGs—or even lesser-known titles already announced—that you think I should have on my radar? Maybe I've missed a trailer, gameplay reveal, or hidden gem!
Owlcat’s upcoming Expanse video game looks really promising. Maybe a next gen mass effect
I must not hype.
Hype is the mind-killer
So many, TES VI, Witcher 4, Witcher 1 Remake, KCD '3', Divinity, Clockwork Revolution, new Obsidian Fallout, whatever game From Soft is cooking up next, and Warhorse's LotR RPG.
Clockwork Revolution and Divinity, mostly.
Brother you are cracked if you think P6 is coming next year lol
I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that basically every sub-genre of RPGs is having a moment right now and it's kind of overwhelming in the best possible way. I keep trying to finish one game and then something else drops or gets a major update and suddenly I have three more things competing for my free time.
The ARPG space is probably where I noticed it first. Not only that new games are coming out (like Dragonkin The Banished) but all existing ones are getting updates or DLCs or SOMETHING this year). My favorite Last Epoch got a new season like 2 months ago that pulled me back in despite thinking I was done with it (I wanted to try the new Rogue skill, it looked really satisfying). I was reminded how solid the game actually is and why I liked it in the first place. The crafting is excellent and the specialized skill trees are really fun, it's probably my favorite game for coming up with homebrew builds.
The most recent ARPG surprise though was No Rest for the Wicked announcing the d 1.0 release in October. Though even at this stage of EA it’s a surprisingly polished Soulslike ARPG hybrid that I was genuinely not expecting to enjoy as much as I did. And of course Grim Dawn finally pushing out that long await Fangs of Asterkarn DLC. TQ2 is slowly inching to full release, same as Path Of Exile 2 that’s just getting better and better. There are just more legitimate options in the genre than there have been in years!
Then you've got the CRPG niche where Baldur's Gate 3 basically set the entire sub genre on fire and now everyone is trying to figure out what the next step looks like. The Disco Elysium “successors” are starting to emerge in greater numbers now, and now we are getting awesome narrative RPGs from so many different studios. The idea that narrative RPGs with literally no combat can become a somewhat popular trend is a welcome surprise for me. Esoteric Ebb was my favorite so far but I have really high hopes for Hollow Home as well, being inspired by real events gives it a bit more gravity in a way. Every single one of these games has excellent art too!
And the remakes are actually delivering this time around, which is not something I take for granted anymore. The Gothic remake somehow managed to keep the spirit of the original intact while delivering a pretty fun modernized experience. That balancing act is incredibly hard to pull off and the fact that it landed as well as it did gives me real hope for future remakes coming (can someone remake the original Deus Ex please)
The awesome part is that this isn't just one sub genre carrying the weight while everything else stagnates. CRPGs, ARPGs, action RPGs with Soulslike elements, turn based stuff, narrative RPGs, tactical RPGs, every single corner of the genre is producing real quality. Five years ago half of these subgenres felt either dead or running on fumes while everyone was playing roguelites and extraction shooters.
I’m just flabbergasted, because I can't remember the last time the RPG landscape looked this vibrant and expansive all across the board. World might be going to shit but at least we got good games, I guess?
FFXIV Evercold
Fable
Stranger than Heaven
Persona 4
Persona 6.. Pizza bet says its delayed
FF7 Revelation
Repeat of 2024 getting Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth back to back to back at the start of the year and then Metaphor in the fall. No complaints from me!
Tipo me.
Confermati:
- Persona 4 Revival (P-Studio) - 18 febbraio 2027
- Fable (Playground Games) - 18 febbraio 2027 (accesso anticipato)
- Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember (Team Ninja) - fine febbraio/inizio marzo 2027
- EXODUS (Archetype) - inizio 2027, probabilmente marzo
- The Expanse: Osiris Reborn (Owlcat Games) - primavera 2027, aprile/maggio
- Final Fantasy VII Revelation (Square Enix) - primavera 2027
- Hunter: The Reckoning - Deathwish (Teyon) - terzo trimestre 2027
- Clockwork Revolution (inXile) - 2027 generico
- Xenoblade Genesis (Monolith Soft) - 2027 generico
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past (CD Projekt RED + Fool's Theory) - 2027 generico
Wildcard (rumor/probabili):
- The Elder Scrolls VI (Bethesda) - possibile fine 2027
- The Witcher IV (CD Projekt RED) - possibile 2027
- Persona 6 (Atlus) - rumor 2027
- Kingdom Hearts IV (Square Enix) - rumor 2027
- Progetto non annunciato di WolfEye Studios (sci-fi retro FPS/RPG) - possibile 2027
Insomma, portafoglio in lacrime e backlog suicida garantiti. Voi quale aspettate di più?
Fable, FF7, and Clockwork will feed me
So as a huge RPG lover (like many of you here), I’ve been thinking…
Is there any upcoming RPG that truly checks every box?
You know, the kind of grand adventure where you start as a nobody, travel a vast world, build real bonds with companions, and make tough choices that actually matter. Where you feel joy, heartbreak, betrayal, love, and friendship all while shaping the world around you until the very end.
Honestly, I feel like those kinds of games are becoming rare. Every new RPG that drops seems to be missing something.
Sometimes the story feels too grounded or linear. Other times, the companions lack depth or interaction is shallow. And don’t get me started on the lack of real choice driven consequences or meaningful romance options.
At this point, I feel like Owlcat Games is one of the only studios consistently delivering that complete package and even then, it's not perfect. No one else really comes close, in my opinion.
So let’s talk:
- Are there any upcoming RPGs that you think will actually have it all?
- And what would your dream RPG look like? (Genre, mechanics, tone, setting, etc.)
I'm kind of bored and craving a long RPG discussion, so let's dive deep into it!

- Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy. This game is also on many Users' lists for upcoming RPGs.
